NESBITT CONTRACTING CO., INC.:
DOING IT BETTER

Nesbitt Contracting Co., Inc. was founded by Thomas J. ('Tom') Nesbitt in 1955. Prior to creating Nesbitt Contracting, Nesbitt was City Engineer for the then small but growing town of Mesa, Arizona. By 1955, Tom Nesbitt had worked with many of contractors in representing the City of Mesa. His take on the experience: After working with a variety of contractors, some good, some not so good, it occurred to me that I could do the work better than most. With that in mind, with an investment of $15,000 and four employees, Nesbitt Contracting was born.

As the company grew, new operations were started to complement the core business. In 1973, Century Materials, Inc. was established in Tempe to provide road base, asphaltic concrete, and redi-mix concrete to Nesbitt Contracting and other valley contractors. During this period, Jim Nesbitt, while still in college at ASU, got involved with the company and directed the installation of Century?s mining, crushing, screening, and batching equipment at the company?s home base at the intersection of Price Road and 1st Street, now Price and Rio Salado Parkway.

A third entity, Arizona Pavement Profiling, Inc., was launched in 1981, shortly after the acquisition of the company?s first milling machine or profiler. Asphalt milling was then a new process that was just getting started around the country. Tom, Jim, and John Nesbitt (John was now also working full time for the firm), saw milling technology as the answer to a number of challenges facing a growing region to build, repair, and maintain an increasingly heavy traffic load on municipal streets, highways, airports, and other applications. Nesbitt Contracting was one of the first companies in the industry to recognize the value of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and it potential to save time and money in road building and repair. Scottsdale was one of the first cities in the region to embrace the new technology and contracted with Nesbitt and Arizona Pavement Profiling (or APP) to perform the work on its streets. APP?s inventory of equipment contains 10 machines of various sizes and capabilities. One of the first to use the 1200, the largest milling machine in production, APP set the standard for quality milling in the southwest, venturing as far as Nebraska to perform milling work for general contractors.

Arizona Pavement Profiling, Inc. also applied state-of-the-art technology to perform cold in-place recycling of asphalt pavements, or CIR. The process permits the milling of deteriorated asphalt pavement, re-screening, crushing, and re-laying material back on the roadway in one seamless operation. This process eliminates the need to develop roadside material sources or pits, heavy trucking of material, and greatly reduces the amount of new liquid asphalt needed to pave. States such as New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona have embraced the CIR process to save on cost, improve efficiency, and preserve natural resources.

Not only has APP successfully used the CIR equipment in the field, but NCC?s shop has become adept at building the CRMX equipment (Cold Recycler Sizer Mixer) for its own operations and for sale to other contractors outside APP?s primary markets. This line of business represents yet another example of Nesbitt?s exploitation of unique opportunities and our innovative approach to the construction markets.
